ARLINGTON – The Arlington Sam Houston boys scored three unanswered goals after trailing 2-0 in the first half against Irving on Friday night. Pedro Medellin hit the game winner in the 61st minute and the Texans won 3-2 in a Class 6A Division 1 bi-district match at Glaspie Field on the campus of Arlington Martin High School.

Sam Houston (22-2), riding a 16-game win streak, will play Allen (20-4-1) in the area round.

Allen beat Hebron 1-0 on Friday night.

Irving, which beat Sam Houston 6-0 in last season’s bi-district round, scored less than four minutes into the match as Andres Moya found the net on a breakaway goal.

The Tigers extended the lead to 2-nil in the 29th minute when Danyerber Molina corralled a loose ball inside the box and beat goalkeeper Alexander Chairez for the goal. Sam Houston cut the deficit in half during the 34th minute as Hector Ochoa hit a one-timer from 20 yards near the far post.

The Texans drew fouls in the box during the 54th and 57th minutes, but the first penalty kick was wide and hit the left post to keep Irving in front. However, Medellin took the second PK and scored the equalizer.

With Sam Houston still aggressive on offense, the Texans grabbed their first lead at 3-2 when Antonio Zavala assisted on Medellin’s second goal 10 yards away and under 20 minutes remaining. It’s the first playoff win for Sam Houston since the 2017 season when the Texans reached the 6A state title game.

One year ago to the day, the Arlington girls needed overtime to beat Irving Nimitz 2-1 in its playoff opener. On Friday, the Colts left no doubt – erupting for four goals after the intermission to win the Class 6A Division 2 bi-district game 5-0 at Glaspie Field on the campus of Arlington Martin HS.

Arlington (19-4-3), which finished third in District 8-6A, will play Prosper (16-2-5) in the area round.

Prosper knocked off defending 6A D2 state champ Flower Mound Marcus 2-1 on Friday.

Nimitz (9-11-1) was called for a foul in the box in the ninth minute, setting up Adelina Martinez with the penalty kick. Martinez scored to give Arlington a 1-nil lead. Senior goalkeeper Chloe Gonzalez kept the Vikings in the match during the first half with a pair of saves coming in the 14th and 35th minutes.

Martinez got the brace in the 47th minute and less than a minute later it was 3-0 when Emma Ivie drew a foul in the box and Alexis Amigon converting the penalty kick. Mayla Dawkins and Sharyah Smith added goals in a 20-second span to extend the lead to 5-nil.

Keepers Ella Morris and Fatima Beltran combined to post the clean sheet.
