From 2015 to 2019, the Argyle girls basketball team was one of the top programs in the state, winning five consecutive state championships. However, the team was in a drought after not even reaching the final four since 2022.
But Argyle put all that to bed as the Eagles are champs once again, defeating Barbers Hill 51-42 in the Class 5A D2 title game on Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The Eagles secured their 7th title all-time, moving them into a tie for 6th most in UIL girls basketball history with Levelland and Waco Midway.
Emma King was voted champ MVP with 18 points on 4 of 7 shooting and 10 of 12 from the charity stripe. She also had 10 rebounds, one assist and two blocks.
Wrigley Green chipped in 13 points on 5 of 10 from the field and seven boards.
Argyle’s defense held Barbers Hill in check with just 4 first-quarter points as the Eagles led 13-4. Argyle’s lead was cut to 20-16 at the intermission.
King hit a layup and 1 of 2 free throws to give Argyle a 25-19 lead with under 6 minutes in the third. Green made a second-chance layup to grow the lead to eight.
Landry Murphy made a driving layup with 27 seconds left in the period and the Eagles continued to lead by seven entering the final stanza.
Argyle scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to pull away. The Eagles got baskets from King (2x) and Green (2x) plus two free throws by King to make it 47-30 with 4:37 on the clock.
Barbers Hill got as close as seven, but that came with 26 seconds remaining.
Argyle coach Chance Westmoreland wins his third title as Eagles’ head coach – joining the team following the 2016-17 season. It’s his 5th title as a head coach and 9th overall since 2005 (Brock/Argyle).
Argyle makes it 5 for 5 in local state champs this week in San Antonio (Lipan, Decatur, Dallas Lincoln and Denton Ryan) with two left to go on Saturday night (Flower Mound, Lancaster).
Ryan and Argyle compete in the same district, 6-5A.
