GIRLS BBALL: Nazareth wins 27th title, Broaddus goes back-to-back

Kam Cleavinger finished with 14 points on 6 of 11 shooting as Nazareth beat Saltillo 43-28 in the Class 1A D2 state championship game on Thursday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Nazareth (32-6) secured its 27th state title in program history – extending its UIL record. It was the program’s 33rd trip to state, also a UIL record.

Saltillo, which also lost to Nazareth in last year’s title game, ends 34-7.

Cleavinger added four rebounds, one assist and three steals. Madi Brockman chipped in eight points with 2 three-pointers and team-highs seven rebounds and six assists.

Nazareth went 16 of 39 from the field and 7 of 17 from behind the arc.

Saltillo shot just 21 percent from the floor and only managed 2 three-pointers. Alana Britain led the team with 10 points while Addi Pipkin added nine.

Nazareth held Saltillo to single digit points in all four quarters. The Swiftettes led 15-5 after the first quarter and 27-11 at the intermission. The lead grew to 42-20 entering the final stanza.

In the first game on Thursday, Broaddus beat Clyde Eula 52-42 in the 1A D1 final. The Bulldogs (36-5) go back-to-back as state champions as they made state for the first time last season and also knocked off Eula in the title match.

Kaylyn Quinney scored a game-high 22 points on 6 of 14 shooting and went 8 of 10 at the free-throw line. She also had five rebounds and two assists. Jaila Mitchell posted a double-double with 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting, 12 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals.

Eula ends the season 36-3.

The Pirates were led by Emma Damron, who dropped 18 points, going 7 of 18 from the field with eight rebounds and three steals. Eula led 10-8 after the opening period, but Broaddus outscored the Pirates 16-8 in the second.

Broaddus led 39-28 after three quarters.

The Bulldogs shot 47 percent against Eula’s 37 percent, and were +11 from the charity stripe.
