ARLINGTON – South Grand Prairie’s tandem backfield duo of Daylon Brooks and Josiah Lucas combined for five touchdown runs as SGP defeated Arlington Martin 34-26 in District 8-6A on Thursday at Glaspie Field.

The game started at 3:45 p.m. and was previously scheduled for Friday night, but due to incoming weather, it was one of many games to be pushed up a day to beat the storm.

SGP improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in district – officially clinching a playoff berth in the 6A D1 bracket. It finishes out the season against Haltom and Arlington Bowie in Week 11, which should be for the district championship. SGP is 7-0 for the first time since 2005 when the team went 10-2 and reached the area round.

It didn’t take a minute for SGP to go up 7-0. Three plays into the opening drive, QB Daylon Brooks scampered for a 44-yard touchdown to get SGP on the scoreboard.

The Martin D looked better on SGP’s second drive – forcing a three-and-out. Kicker Ethan Brown capped off Martin’s possession with a 49-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3 in the opening period.

Brooks, who also plays baseball and is committed with UT-Arlington, got his second touchdown run – from 17 yards as he broke away from one defender on the Martin sideline. The big spark on the drive came when he threw a 39-yard pass to receiver Ryan Goss.

SGP extended its lead to 14-3 with 4:40 to play in the frame.

Martin got its first touchdown early in the second quarter. QB Chase Devoll picked up two passes of at least 20 yards on the drive – 20 to De’marius Hoye and then 25 to Daylon Cobb that resulted in a first-and-goal at the 5.

Two plays later Devoll scored from the 2.

The kick was wide right and SGP’s lead was cut to 14-9.

Martin made a play on the ensuing drive when Daylan Howell intercepted a pass at the Martin 15. But that offensive drive stalled and Martin was forced to punt.

SGP led 21-9 at the intermission when its 3-star running back Josiah Lucas rumbled off for a 41-yard touchdown run with 3:14 on the clock. Lucas committed to San Diego State this summer.

Martin opened the third quarter with three points. Brown connected on his second field goal – from 33 yards – to make it 21-12 and then after the defense forced a punt near midfield, Martin sophomore back Javian Jones-Priest burst through a gap, broke one tackle and scored on a 57-yard run to cut the deficit to 21-19 with 5:59 left in the period.

SGP marched down field and Lucas scored his second TD to give his team a 28-19 edge with 8:28 left to play.

Martin was in its territory when a fake punt was executed. Brown took the snap and ran for about 20 yards to midfield. Martin would turn it into points as Ricky Montgomery scored on a 6-yard TD run and it was 28-26 with 4:57 remaining.

Lucas added his third TD run of the day – from 35 yards. However, instead of a 9-point lead, the kick was wide left and Martin was down one possession, 34-26 with 3:30 to play.

Martin got good field position thanks to a 15-yard penalty on the SGP touchdown and went across the 50, but a few miscues set up a fourth-and-13. A pass from Devoll was complete on the left side, but the yardage came up short as SGP took over on downs and was able to run out the clock.

Martin drops to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in district – highly likely eliminating the program from the playoffs with five teams in front of the standings. Martin ends with Sam Houston and Arlington High.
