For the first time in 30 years, FW Carter-Riverside will have a football playoff game.
The Eagles edged out FW Western Hills 36-34 on Friday to clinch the final playoff berth in District 5-4A D1 – the program’s first playoff berth since 1995.
Carter-Riverside will face Alvarado (9-0) at 7 pm Thursday from Farrington Field in Fort Worth.
FW Eastern Hills and Carter-Riverside won in Week 11 and FW Southwest lost to Decatur – forcing a three-way tie for two playoff spots.
Eastern Hills locked up the #3 seed because of points. Then it went back to head-to-head with Carter-Riverside beating Southwest 42-36 in Week 7.
Carter-Riverside finished the regular season 4-6 overall and 3-3 in district play.
In 1995, the Eagles went 8-3 and were district runner-up under head coach Gary Ponder.
Against Western Hills, senior back Deandre Fields rushed 18 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Bobby Fields rushed 10 times for 180 yards and also scored two touchdowns. Ryan Walters added 99 yards and one touchdown.
The Eagles are led by David Lara, who’s in his first season as head coach, but has been with the program for more than 10 years.
