For the first time since 1999 – the Collinsville Pirates are UIL baseball state champions after taking out Centerville in the Class 2A semifinals and Hawley in the title game last week from Round Rock’s Dell Diamond.
The Pirates, #1 in the 2A state rankings, end 40-3.
This was the program’s fourth state appearance (1998, 1999, 2023) and second title.
Collinsville beat Cross Plains 6-5 in the 1A championship during the 1999 season.
The Pirates shut out Centerville 10-0 in six innings and shut out Hawley 9-0 on Thursday. They became just the sixth UIL baseball champ in the past 10 years to post two shutout wins at the state tournament across all classes.
In the semifinals against Centerville, Rylan Newman tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out six in his complete game effort. He finished the season with a perfect 15-0 record from the mound. His offense scored two runs in the second, two in the third, five in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Newman didn’t allow a hit until Centerville got both in the top of the fifth.
Newman led off the Collinsville second with a triple to left and Garrett Trevino belted a two-run home run for a 2-0 lead. The Pirates led off the third with another base runner after Reed Patterson singled to third. After Logan Jenkins was hit by a pitch and both runners stealing, Jaxon Jenkins walked to load the bases.
Cash Morgan flied out to right to drive in Patterson and Logan Jenkins to extend the lead to 4-0.
Jaxon Jenkins led off the fifth inning with a single to left. Morgan walked and Newman singled to third to load the bases again for the Pirates. Trevino was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Peyton Davidson reached on a fielder’s choice to make it 6-0. Brandon Cantu scored on a wild pitch and Landon Carpenter hit a two-run single through the left side.
Logan Jenkins reached on a throwing error in the sixth and Jaxon Jenkins singled up the middle. Two batters later and Morgan hit the walk-off single on a bunt and Logan Jenkins scored to end the game. Morgan and Trevino both drove in three runs. Newman and Jaxon Jenkins had two hits apiece.
Newman faced 21 batters in six innings.
In the championship against Hawley, Logan Jenkins allowed four hits and one walk, and struck out six through seven innings. He finished the season with a 15-1 record from the mound.
The Pirates scored in every inning but one, including three in the third and sixth. Logan Jenkins led off the Collinsville first inning with a single to center. Morgan singled and advanced to second on a Hawley error. Morgan stole third and scored on a double steal attempt.
Peyton Davidson hit a one-out single in the second and Colin Barnes reached on a fielder’s choice to increase the lead to 2-0. Chad Davidson scored from second. Patterson led off the third with a single up the middle. Jaxon Jenkins singled two batters later and both runners scored on a single by Morgan.
Trevino added an RBI single to grow the lead to 5-0.
Morgan doubled down the left field line to open the Collinsville fifth. Newman followed with a bunt single and two batters later Peyton Davidson had an RBI ground out to third. Morgan scored to make it 6-0. Barnes, Patterson and Logan Jenkins all reached to start the sixth. Barnes scored on a grounder from Jaxon Jenkins.
Morgan walked in a run and Nick Cox stole home to make it 9-0.
Logan Jenkins retired the order in the seventh with two grounders and a strikeout.
Morgan was voted state champ MVP after going 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Morgan, Newman, Patterson, Trevino and the Jenkins brothers were named to the all-tournament team.
