Coppell 42, Dallas Jesuit 23
The Coppell Cowboys scored the last 14 points to pull away from the Jesuit Rangers and remained unbeaten after winning the Class 6A D2 area round bout at the Ford Center in Frisco. Jesuit ends the season 8-4.
Coppell, #19 in the Class 6A state rankings, saw its lead trimmed to 28-23 in the second half. But O’Marion Mbakwe scored on a 57-yard touchdown with 4:13 left in the fourth quarter to give the Cowboys a 12-point margin. Mbakwe added a 32-yard TD run with seconds left on the clock.
The Cowboys (12-0) had led 28-10 at halftime, but Jesuit scored 13 points in the third quarter to pull within five. Charlie Peters connected with Zane Williams for a 6-yard TD, but the kick was no good making the score 28-16. Then Peters hit Jaeger Krauss for another touchdown to make it 28-23 with 3:20 left in the third.
Coppell gained 227 of its 389 yards on the ground sparked by Mbakwe’s 134 yards on only 10 carries. Xavier Mosley added 90 yards and one TD. Star QB Edward Griffin was 15 of 20 for 162 yards and three TDs – all to receiver Baron Tipton.
Peters finished 23 of 38 for 266 yards and two scores for the Rangers.
Coppell moves on to the Region 1 semifinals to play either Midland or Byron Nelson during Thanksgiving weekend.
Grandview 56, Pottsboro 42
Casey Gannon rushed in a touchdown with 9:07 left in the fourth quarter that broke a 42-42 tie as the Grandview Zebras won a shootout against the Cardinals in the Class 3A D1 area round at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
The Zebras improve to 11-1 while Pottsboro ends at 9-3.
Grandview goes to the regional semis to face either Mount Vernon or Malakoff.
Pottsboro took the first lead when RB Major McBride scored from 43 yards out less than three minutes into the game. McBride leads all of DFW/NTX in rushing. Grandview tied it with 2:49 to play in the opening period on a TD from Ryder Hayes to Carter Collins.
The Cards would grow the lead to 28-14 before both teams were tied at 35 during halftime. After another McBride TD, the Zebras tied it at 42 on a Jaleal Allen TD catch with 1:47 left in the third quarter.
Easton Ebner had an interception for the Grandview D. The offense couldn’t move the ball but the Zebras did pin the Cards to the 1. On the ensuing drive, Pottsboro couldn’t convert on a fourth and 1 and Grandview offense took it and scored the final TD of the night.
SL Carroll 49, Frenship 14
The running tandem of Riley Wormley and Davis Penn combined for 204 yards on just 13 carries and seven touchdowns as the Dragons rolled to the Class 6A D2 area round championship in Abilene.
Carroll (10-1), #10 in 6A, will face McKinney or Highland Park in the regional semis.
Wormley, a 4-star 2025, had 153 yards and four scores. Georgia Tech commit Graham Knowles was an efficient 20 of 21 passing for 223 yards.
Gunter 83, WF City View 6
The Gunter Tigers, #1 in 3A D2 and the defending state champs, continued their dominance in the area round championship against City View.
Gunter (12-0) will face Scurry Rosser or Comanche in the regional semis next weekend.
The Tigers led 20-0 less than three minutes into the game.
Gunter gave up points for the first time since October 6. The Tigers had out scored their previous five opponents 349-0. Overall in 12 games, they own a 745-62 point differential.
Brock 76, Muleshoe 13
The Brock Eagles scored 34 points in the first quarter and 62 in the first half during their Class 3A D1 area round championship against Muleshoe. Brock (9-3) heads to the regional semifinals to play Shallowater or Clyde.
Colt Matlock got the flood gates going with a touchdown during the punt return. Brody Woods hit Britton Burrows for a 19-yard TD to make it 14-0. Woods then found Matlock for a 39-yard TD for Brock’s third score of the first quarter.
Jaxon Hart also scored and Jesse Rusinek had two first-quarter interceptions.
RB Brett Tutter punched in the fifth score with two seconds left on the clock.
Woods scored two more TDs only this time with his feet and Cale Bramblett found the end zone on a pick six to push the lead to 55-0 with two minutes before halftime. The Eagles pressured the Muleshoe QB and forced a fumble, and Hyatt Dunaway returned the fumble for the score as time expired to make it 62-0.
Brock’s final two TDs came on Matlock’s kickoff return and a Coty Farmer rushing score.
Springtown, Decatur advance
District 4-4A D1 mates Springtown and Decatur won area round championships and advance to the Region 1 quarterfinals. Springtown (9-3) beat El Paso Riverside 62-21 and will next face either Brownwood or Canyon Randall.
Decatur (8-4) defeated Andrews 56-14 and will face Canyon or Lubbock Estacado during Thanksgiving weekend.
