GM Sports Media College Athlete Of The Week (11/5): Waxahachie’s Alli Wells

In our latest installment of GM Sports Media College Athlete Of The Week, we turn to UT-Arlington graduate student and Waxahachie grad Alli Wells, who became the all-time leader in digs for the Mavericks.

Winners are athletes that played high school in DFW.

On Saturday, in her final appearance at home at the College Park Center, Waxahachie great Alli Wells broke the program’s all-time career digs record as the Mavs beat Seattle University 25-17, 25-13, 25-12.

UTA improved to 8-6 in the WAC and 19-8 overall.

Wells is up to 2,034 career digs – breaking the previous record of 2,033 held by Alicia Shaffer (2008-11).

Wells had nine digs and five assists on Saturday.

During the season, she has already been to three all-tournament teams: Amy Svoboda Memorial, Tulsa Invitational and UTA Invitational. In 27 matches and 101 sets played, Wells has 402 digs, 107 assists and 19 aces. She has 2,034 digs in 128 career matches and 470 sets. Wells is averaging 4.3 digs per set in her career.

As a senior last season, Wells was voted WAC Defensive Player of the Week.

As a junior in 2021, she was voted to the Sun Belt Second Team.

As a sophomore, she was Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year.

While at Waxahachie, Wells played under legendary coach Sandy Faussett Stoops. Wells was two time all district and even broke the program records as a track athlete in the 4×400 and 4×200.
