There were some questions entering the season surrounding Byron Nelson’s offense, specifically the passing game. The Bobcats graduated star QB Jake Wilson, their top two receivers and their starting running back.
But Tom Von Grote has come in and Byron hasn’t missed a beat through the first two weeks of the season.
Von Grote was nearly perfect in the first half as the Bobcats steamrolled the Broncos 62-3 on Thursday night at McKinney ISD Stadium.
BN improved to 2-0 after beating Plano 54-13 in Week 1.
The Bobcats scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and were able to build a 35-3 at halftime. Von Grote found Landon Farco and Dmitry Schmidt for touchdowns in the first quarter.
Manny Mulumba scored on a 2-yard run 19 seconds into the second quarter. After Boyd scored its only points of the night on a field goal, Byron scored 41 unanswered.
Tucker James scored on a 48-yard run to up the lead to 28-3. Then Von Grote hit Leo Almanza from 5 yards out to make it 35-3 with 43 seconds left in the half.
Von Grote completed 18 of 20 passing for 267 yards and three TDs in the first half.
He finished with 280 yards and four touchdowns – to put his total to 10 TDs in two games.
Jonathan Kabeya returned a punt 65 yards to give Byron a 42-3 lead in the third. Tulsa commit Ashton Williams picked off a Boyd pass and Von Grote hit Ezra Malamura for his fourth touchdown with 8:10 left in the third quarter.
Grant Bizjack came in for Von Grote and scored on a 5-yard run late in the third.
Bizjack is the younger brother of Finley Bizjack, the best basketball player in Byron Nelson program history. Finley is now a freshman at Butler.
The Bobcats final score came late in the fourth when Blayne Johnson ran one in untouched.
Byron out-gained Boyd 496-104 which included 216 yards on the ground. The only flaw in Byron’s game was penalties as the team was called for 12 flags.
The Bobcats final non-district game will be against Braswell in Week 3.
