After 35 years as coach, including the last five with Lake Worth, Tracy Welch announced his retirement on Monday, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
Welch arrived to Lake Worth in 2018 and led the Bullfrogs to the playoffs in all five seasons.
The Bullfrogs went 35-23 under Welch, including 10-3 last fall. Lake Worth went 6-1 in district and captured its first district championship since 2009. Lake Worth defeated Alvarado 23-20 during the Class 4A D1 bi-district round and Dallas Carter 7-2 in the area round.
It was Lake Worth’s second bi-district win in as many seasons.
Lake Worth’s win in 2021 over Hereford was the program’s first since 2009. The trip to the third round was Lake Worth’s first since 2000. The Bullfrogs went 9-3 overall and 4-2 in district during the 2021 season.
Welch is the winningest coach in Lake Worth football program history.
Prior to Lake Worth, Welch coached at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. Then after one season with Kansas State, Welch coached at Copperas Cove for 24 seasons. Then he was hired as head coach and athletic director at Lake Worth. In his first season in 2018, Lake Worth won five games, which was the most since 2013.
