According to a source close to GM Sports Media, the Grapevine baseball season has come to an abrupt and startling end after the Mustangs were ruled out of postseason play due to an ineligible player on Wednesday.
It is unclear who the player is, at this time.
Grapevine was set to start a 3-game series in the Class 5A D2 bi-district round with Chisholm Trail on Wednesday with Game 2 on Thursday and a possible Game 3 on Friday.
Originally, it was Grapevine vs Chisholm Trail and Argyle vs Brewer in D2 along with Birdville vs Granbury and Colleyville Heritage vs Aledo in D1.
Denton Ryan (18-10-1) will take Grapevine’s playoff spot after the Raiders came in fifth place – 1 game behind Argyle in the 6-5A standings. But instead of going D2 like Grapevine, Ryan is the #2 seed in D1 behind Birdville while Colleyville Heritage drops from D1 to D2 along with Argyle.
The new matchups are as follows: in D1 it’s Birdville vs Granbury (still) and Aledo vs Ryan. Meanwhile in D2 it’s Heritage and Chisholm Trail while Argyle will continue to play Brewer.
Grapevine finished the regular season 28-3 and was ranked #1 in the state for Class 5A according to the Texas HS Baseball website. The Mustangs rolled through 6-5A with a 12-0 record.
Grapevine was a clear favorite to win its 3rd straight state championship in Round Rock. The Mustangs beat Humble Kingwood Park 9-5 in last year’s 5A D2 title match. They beat Lovejoy 6-5 the year before for the 5A championship.
