Combined no-hitter leads Centennial past Arlington Heights

Kendall Cottongame and Ava Ellis threw a combined no-hitter and struck out 15 to lead Burleson Centennial past FW Arlington Heights 11-0 in 5 innings during Game 1 of their Class 5A D1 bi-district round series on Wednesday night at Alvarado.

Game 2 will be back at Alvarado on Thursday with first pitch at 5 pm.

Cottongame got the start for the Spartans (27-6-1), who won District 8-5A, and struck out 9 of the 10 batters she faced in 3 innings. Ellis allowed 1 walk and struck out 6 in 2 innings of relief.

Centennial finished with 5 doubles by Ellis, Gabby Saavedra, Kalie Randall, Cottongame and Kendall Davis.

After a scoreless first inning, the Spartans poured on 4 runs in the bottom of the second.

Randall scored on a sac fly RBI from Mackenzie McKeon and Scarlet Day made it 2-0 with a single to left. Ellis, who is committed to Lamar University, doubled in Day with a hit to left field and Ellis scored on an RBI by Saavedra.

Centennial added 6 runs in the third – all with 2 outs.

The Spartans got RBI singles by McKeon, Davis and Brooke Mayner while Saavedra hit a 2-run double to left. Day reached on a dropped third strike which allowed Davis to score.

Mayner’s RBI single drove in Saavedra that extended the lead to 10-0.

Randall doubled in Miley Milliron to give Centennial an 11-0 advantage in the fourth.

Centennial extended its winning streak to 15 games. The Spartans went 14-0 in district play.
