RECAPS
Marcus clinches playoff berth over Coppell
FM Marcus erupted for 5 runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull away and beat Coppell 7-1 in a District 5-6A contest on Friday night.
Marcus ends 8-6 in district play and grabs the fourth and final playoff berth while Coppell falls to 6-8 and will not advance to postseason play. The Marauders will be the #2 seed in D2 and face Prosper in bi-district. The two teams played in the first round last season with Marcus taking out Prosper.
Emily Souders, a Missouri commit, hit a liner to left field in the top of the second inning for a 2-run double to give Marcus the early lead.
Coppell put pressure on in the bottom of the second with runners on the corners. Abbie Pison hit an RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then the Cowgirls loaded the bases with 1 out, but Marcus pitcher Bella Valdez got out of the jam. The second out came from a grounder to Souders at short who fired to Makenna Barr at home for the force and then Valdez got a soft grounder back to the circle before throwing to Alex Arriola at first base to end the inning.
Arriola, who recently committed to West Texas A&M, hit a solo home run to right center to start the rally in the sixth inning.
Madisynn Dunn and Barr hit back-to-back 2-run singles that upped the lead to 7-1.
Valdez scattered 5 hits and 1 run across 7 innings, and struck out 3 batters.
Eaton downs Keller, avoids play-in
Eaton scored 3 times in the top of the sixth and then held off Keller to take a 3-1 win in a District 4-6A game on Friday at Keller High School.
With the win, Eaton (23-9-1 overall, 11-5 district) avoids a play-in game with Southlake Carroll (21-12, 10-6) for the final playoff berth out of 4-6A. The Eagles will be the second-seed in the 6A Division 1 playoffs while Carroll will miss post-season play.
Keller (22-10-1, 11-5) will head to the playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the 6A Division 2 bracket.
Faith Zajac had the big blow in the 3-run sixth with lined double to center that drove in Ava Jacinto, who reached on an error, and Erin Jacinto, who singled to left. An out later Jordan Jameson singled in Zajac to up the lead to 3-0.
Zajac was 3 for 4 at the plate with the 2-run double and a run scored with Erin Jacinto picking up 2 hits in 4 trips. Mackenna Jackson homered for the Indians in the bottom of the sixth for Keller’s only run.
Bethany Bolton was stellar in the circle for the Eagles tossing all 7 innings scattering 4 hits, the 1 earned run with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Boswell takes share of district crown with win over Lake Ridge
Boswell broke open a close game with 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Pioneers pulled away from Mansfield Lake Ridge 9-3 in a District 3-6A showdown on Friday at Boswell High School.
With the win, Boswell (21-4-1 overall, 10-2 district) claimed a share of the 3-6A title with idle Mansfield Legacy (19-11, 10-2). Lake Ridge (17-14-1, 9-3) had already clinched a playoff berth as well and will represent 3-6A as the second-seed in Division 1.
Boswell, the top seed in Division 2, led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but got RBI singles from Savannah Neighbors, Sami Wright, Addy Watson, Evelyn Manjarrez and Audrey Tullis, all with two out in the inning. Watson came on in relief and pitched 6 innings of 3-hit, no-run ball for the Pioneers.
Boswell pounded out 11 hits, all singles, with Neighbors (3 for 4), Watson (3 for 4) and Manjarrez (2 for 3) leading the way. Ryan Roberts and Payton Bauer had 2 hits each for Lake Ridge.
Cleburne wins, gets help to keep playoff hopes alive
Payton Slovak homered and Kadenze Quzma drove in 3 runs to keep Cleburne’s playoff hopes alive with a 17-7 win over Arlington Seguin in a District 8-5A game on Friday night at Arlington’s Workman Complex.
Cleburne (15-18, 7-7) came into the day needing a win and Mansfield Timberview loss against Burleson Centennial to have a chance at a playoff berth.
With Timberview’s loss to Centennial, Cleburne and Timberview are both 7-7 in district and tied for the final playoff berth with the season series split.
Quzma’s RBI double to right gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Seguin tied it a half inning later on a fielder’s choice by Ixchel Lincon.
Jaycie Jones scored on a wild pitch in the Cleburne third and Carlee Kent drove in 2 with a single to right that extended the lead to 4-1. Quzma and Azriela Huber added RBI singles to give the Yellowjackets an 8-1 lead in the fourth.
Seguin got RBI doubles from Lincon and Cecilia Razo in the bottom of the fourth that cut the deficit to 8-4.
Dayana Mitchell’s RBI double in the sixth inning pushed the Cleburne lead to 11-4. Slovak hit a 2-run home run in the seventh as the Yellowjackets added 5 more runs in the final inning.
