GEORGETOWN – It was a case of David vs Goliath when San Antonio Pieper took on Frisco Wakeland in the boys Class 5A D2 state championship match on Friday night at Birkelbach Field.

Wakeland came in 5-time champ and in its 10th state appearance.

Pieper was in just its fourth year – making its first state championship game.

The Wolverines dominated the possession with 14 shots against Pieper’s 4, but a goal in the 72nd minute sent the Warriors to a 1-0 victory.

Wakeland (25-2-1), which had a 22-game winning streak, had 9 shots in the second half against 2 for Pieper. One was none bigger in Pieper’s short history when Jack Blische took a cross from Jackson Blankenship to give the Warriors a 1-nil lead.

While Wakeland had a large margin in shots, another Pieper hero was senior goalkeeper Nolan Masker, who was voted state champ MVP with 10 saves.

Pieper ends the season 21-2-5.
