BOYS

Aledo defeats Denton in PKs

The Bearcats won a district title last year before suffering a heartbreaking loss in their playoff opener to cut the season short. Aledo made sure not to have that feeling again on Thursday night against Denton.

After a 2-2 tie following overtime, the Bearcats knocked off the Broncos 4-3 in a shootout during their Class 5A D1 bi-district game at Eagle Mountain HS in Fort Worth.

Aledo (20-3-2), which hasn’t lost a game since Jan. 13, will play Joshua in the area round.

Harrison Kear scored a goal and assisted on one by Trapper Davis during regulation. Robby Sloan had the other assist. Meanwhile, in the shootout, the Bearcats got scores from Kear, Davis, Kyle Storck and Erik Soltow.

GIRLS

Weatherford wins first playoff game in 18 years

Stella Adams finished off an assist by Landree Cooper and the Kangaroos beat Byron Nelson 1-0 in their Class 6A D2 bi-district game on Thursday night in Weatherford.

The Roos (18-2-3) will play Midland in the area round at 7 pm Tuesday from Shotwell Stadium in Abilene. Midland beat El Paso Pebble Hills on Thursday.

Weatherford wins its first playoff game since 2008 when the team beat Abilene in the playoff opener. Following the 2008 season, the Roos were 0-10 in playoff matches. It was also the first goal in a playoff game since 2015 against Midland. Weatherford had been shutout in the postseason in its previous six games.
