DFW Softball Recap: Melissa takes down Lovejoy, McKinney North; Adrian with another 3 HR game

Melissa, our #1 5A team in the metroplex, got two wins this week to stay undefeated in District 9-5A – beating Lovejoy 7-3 on Tuesday night and McKinney North 15-0 on Wednesday.

The Cardinals improved to 18-2 overall and 6-0 in district – grabbing sole possession.

In Lucas on Tuesday, Melissa jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Finlee Williams hit a lead off single and stole second. Bradyn Young followed with an RBI single to center. With runners on the corners, coach Cassie Crabtree called the double steal and the Lovejoy throw back home was off to make it 2-0.

Izzy Gonzales added a RBI double to deep left.

Lovejoy pitcher Izzy Guarriello got through three innings and struck out three batters before being replaced by Gisela Boitmann (four innings, six hits, four runs).

Lulu Adrian hit a triple to right center and Gonzales added an RBI sac fly to extend the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth.

Boitmann drilled a two-run home run to center that helped Lovejoy cut the lead in half at 4-2.

The Cardinals tacked on three in the sixth with an RBI single from Williams and a two-run home run by Adrian – her ninth of the season – making it 7-2.

Katie Kinzig added an RBI single to center in the sixth for the Leopards before Maes closed it out in the seventh. The Leopards had two runners on before the game ended on a ground out to Gonzales at first base. Maes finished with 10 strikeouts.

Melissa got wins on back-to-back days with a 15-0 home win over McKinney North on Wednesday. The Cardinals scored five runs in the first inning and 10 in the second.

Adrian hit three home runs and drove in six.

The junior Arkansas commit had her second three home-run game in eight days. She had three homers and 10 RBIs vs Anna on March 10. Adrian is up to 12 this season and 51 in her high school career.

Williams, Gonzales and Rihanna Wheeler also homered. Wheeler drove in four runs. Melissa homered four times in the second with Adrian going yard twice in the inning.

Adrian had two home runs and seven RBIs in the first inning against Anna. She leads the team with 44 RBIs this season.
