After dropping its season opener on Monday, the Burleson Elks softball team bounced back big time in College Station with three wins over top programs at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
The Elks went 3-1 over Deer Park, Abilene and Flower Mound.
Their only loss came against Salado where they nearly pulled off the comeback and walk off but fell just short 7-6. Deer Park is a traditional powerhouse in the state while Abilene went undefeated in district last season. Flower Mound is coming off an appearance in the 6A D1 state semifinals.
Against DP (7-3), UTSA commit Addy Sellers had four hits and four runs batted in. The Elks broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Isabel Martinez and Kaydan Dorman scored RBI singles in the frame capped by Seller’s two-run triple to center on a 3-1 pitch.
Leila Davis was sensational from the circle against Abilene (9-0) – scattering five hits across five innings with three strikeouts. Sellers dominated again with four more hits and six more RBIs. She had two singles, a triple and two-run home run. Lola Andrews (South Dakota State) added two RBI singles and an RBI double.
Burleson led 4-3 against Flower Mound after four innings before pulling away with four runs in the top of the fifth to pick up an 8-3 win. Sellers started up a four-run third with a two-run single to center. The Elks scored on three-straight RBI walks in the fifth and Andrews drove in a run with a single to left field.
