FORT WORTH – Dejon Everett blocked Saginaw’s game-tying extra point attempt in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference in Wyatt’s 21-20 win in District 4-5A Division 1 on Saturday at Clark Stadium.

Wyatt improves to 3-0 in district and 4-1 overall while Saginaw drops to 2-2 and 1-1.

Tied 14-14 in the third quarter, Wyatt got the ball with 3:59 on the clock before embarking on a long scoring drive.

The Chaparrals gained 81 yards on 14 plays and ate up over eight minutes while scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 7:44 left in the fourth quarter.. The drive included nine runs capped by a 2-yard score from Dale Brown.

The big play came on the third snap of the drive when QB Kentrell Steward connected with Mar’kavion Toombs for 54 yards down to the Saginaw 27. The Saginaw defense was hit with multiple penalties that pushed the Chaps inside the 10.

Saginaw needed only three plays to pull within 21-20.

Isaiah Quinones rumbled his way for 48 yards and after an incomplete pass and false penalty, QB Josh Greek threw a 32-yard TD to Kaiden Stewart with 7:06 to play.

But on the ensuing PAT, Everett came through the Saginaw line to block the kick – keeping Wyatt ahead by a point.

Wyatt did all it could to keep the ball the rest of the quarter.

Justin Lindley picked up a first down on third and 1 and Steward gained 10 on the next play. Steward later picked up 15 to give another set of downs for the Chaparrals. Lindley also picked up a 15-yard run to the Saginaw 39.

The Riders took a timeout on third and 8 with 1:54 left when Steward threw a 14-yard pass to Joshua Grays. Wyatt then went to victory formation to seal the win. Last year, Saginaw went 11-1 with an 8-0 district championship, including a 17-15 win over Wyatt in Week 5.

Wyatt is on a four-game win streak after dropping the opener 35-22 vs WF Memorial. The Chaparrals started off district with a very good 30-27 win over Chisholm Trail. They finish out the regular season against Trimble Tech, Arlington Heights, Paschal, North Side and South Hills.

The Chaparrals scored on the first drive of the game – capping off a 7-play 65-yard drive. Steward scored on a 2-yard run with 9:30 left in the first quarter.

Saginaw’s first two drives ended on fourth down with the Rough Riders turning the ball over on downs. The Rider tied the game on a 1-yard run from Elijah Irvin with 8:14 left in the second quarter.

Saginaw took the lead thanks to its defense when Quinones scored on a 69-yard fumble return. Wyatt drove into Saginaw territory when Isaac Bukasa got to Steward and jarred the ball loose. Quinones picked it up and went untouched for six.

The Chaps responded when Steward threw a pretty pass to Everett for a 39-yard touchdown – tying the game at 14 with 2:23 left in the half.

Wyatt gained over 450 yards with Brown running for over 100 on the ground and Steward throwing for 200+.
