SAGINAW – Senior Bella MacMahon tossed her first career playoff shutout as she led Grapevine to a 6-0 win over Azle in Game 1 of their Class 5A Division 2 bi-district series on Thursday at Saginaw HS.
Game 2 is 7 pm Friday at Saginaw.
MacMahon, a South Dakota State signee, allowed five hits and struck out five. Grapevine, which went runner-up in District 6-5A, scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
MacMahon hit Azle’s first batter Ema Lehr, but still faced three in the top of the first.
Lehr was caught stealing before MacMahon got a strikeout and ground out.
Ashley Johnson hit a pitch to deep left field that drove in a run for the Mustangs, who also scored twice on a two-out error on the Hornets. Grace Kelley capped the inning with an RBI single to left.
Grapevine would turn a 4-6-3 double play in the top of the second while Azle starting pitcher Corynne Barone had a clean 1-2-3 frame to send it to the third.
Kelley added her second RBI and Ashlyn Asaff beat out a throw at first for an infield single that led to another run scored that extended the Mustangs’ lead to 6-0.
Azle did manage to have a few defensive gems, including two from first baseman Bella Tipton. The sophomore caught two liners in the game. The Hornets also got a tag out at home when Grapevine tried to score on a passed ball. Catcher Brynlei Taylor threw it back to Adrianna Wiedeman who applied the tag. Grapevine was also tagged out at third on a run down with Taylor throwing it to Brianna Zalesky.

MARCUS 14, PROSPER 0 (5)
The Marauders scored 11 runs in the final two innings to pick up the run-rule victory over Prosper during Game 1 of their Class 6A D2 bi-district series on Thursday. Game 2 is 7 pm Friday at The Colony HS.
Marcus handed Prosper its third loss of the season (20-3).
The Eagles were District 6-6A champs while Marcus finished fourth in 5-6A.
Starting pitcher Chloe Poteete allowed just two hits and struck out seven batters. Prosper pitcher Peyton Moya picked up one of her six strikeouts on the night during the top of the first inning as Marcus left two runners stranded at second and third.
Prosper put its own threat on in the first but Poteete also struck out a batter to send it to the second. Marcus led 1-0 after Myleene Olguin hit a pitch to deep left field for an RBI. Poteete got out of another jam in the second as the Eagles stranded two more in scoring position.
After intentionally walking Emily Souders, Brynnan Wilhite laid down a bunt and Prosper couldn’t get the out – committing an error that led to two runs and a 3-0 lead for the Marauders.
Poteete struck out the side in the third.
Prosper committed two more errors that led to four Marcus runs in the fourth. Wilhite also drove in her second run on a sac fly to right and the Marauders led 8-0. Marlee Middeleer hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth. Calli Rasmussen hit an RBI single and Olguin added an RBI triple.
Top 5: @marcus_softball has pushed this one into run-rule territory. Marlee Middeleer comes through with a two-run double that boosts the Marcus lead vs Prosper to 11-0. pic.twitter.com/ckxe1aCCxM
