Cleburne head softball coach Troy Culwell announced his retirement on Tuesday after 28 years of coaching. Culwell just completed his fourth season with the Yellowjackets softball program and eighth overall as a head coach.
During his career, Culwell has also been a head coach in football, track and powerlifting and assisting a several more. He’s also spent time with softball programs at FW North Side and Jacksonville.
Culwell won 130 games in his softball career.
The Yellowjackets wrapped up the season with an 11-6-1 overall record and 6-8 in District 8-5A. The team just missed out on the playoffs, finishing in fifth place.
His best year with Cleburne came in 2023 when the Jackets went 17-14.
“Today, I am ending a significant chapter in my life as I officially announced my resignation as the head coach of the Cleburne Lady Jackets softball team and my retirement from coaching after 28 incredible years. Throughout my coaching career, I’ve had the privilege to lead and inspire young athletes across a variety of sports, including football, basketball, powerlifting, track, baseball, and, of course, softball. Each role has shaped me as a coach and as a person, teaching me the values of perseverance, teamwork, and the profound impact we can have on one another’s lives,” Culwell said on Facebook.
“My time as a coach has been especially memorable- sharing victories, challenges, and the growth I’ve witnessed in my players have filled my heart with pride. Each of my players has taught me just as much as I hope I have imparted to you. The dedication and resilience shown by my players has inspired me, and I feel truly honored to have been part of your journeys.
As a member of the THSCA Coaching family, I have built life-long relationships with so many coaches over the years from high school through college. These friendships have helped sustain me as a coach and a man, allowing me to learn more about each sport but also how to make in impact in the lives of my young athletes to help them become successful in their adult lives. I even have several former players that have joined the coaching profession to become colleagues and peers.
As I step away from coaching, I want to recognize the unwavering support of my incredible family, who have made this journey possible. My wife, Monica, and I have been married for 31 wonderful years, and she has been my rock through every season of life. Together, we have raised five amazing children and welcomed two wonderful additions to our family: our son Brandon, son-in-law Kevin, daughter Kaitlin, son-in-law Tate, son Ty, daughter Erin, and son Evan. Their love and encouragement have kept me motivated to pursue my passion for coaching.
I look forward to seeing each of my former players soar to new heights in the seasons of life to come. I have no doubt that the future is bright for each of you. While I may be retiring from coaching, I will always be a proud member of the Cleburne family.
Thank you for the love, support, and unforgettable moments. The bonds we formed will always hold a special place in my heart. May God bless everyone on of you along your journey as he has mine and my family’s.
With much love and gratitude,
Coach Troy Culwell
