FORT WORTH— After a weekend in which the community of Springtown tragically lost the life of one of their athletes, the Porcupines took the field for a district matchup with Fort Worth Carter-Riverside. They had no trouble honoring their fallen comrade as they cruised from start to finish, taking down the Eagles 58-0 in spectacular fashion.
Springtown scored 42 points in the first half and did not allow a first down from scrimmage all game. The scoring got started with a 76 yard punt return by Chase Thompson after the Porcupines forced a three-and-out. From there it was the Kaine Hill show.
Hill was responsible for the next six touchdowns. He finished his night having completed eight of his ten passes for 217 yards and six touchdowns. Each touchdown pass was to a different receiver.
Riley Jackson caught the first one midway through the first quarter. On the ensuing drive, Riverside fumbled on third down and Jurvan Gutierrez recovered the ball to give the Porcupines good field position. On the next play Hill threw to Thompson on a screen that resulted in a 19-yard scoring play. After forcing another three-and-out, Hill found a wide open Karson Ferguson as time expired in the first quarter to bring the score to 28-0.
Just a couple of minutes into the second quarter Hill hit Caden Rodgers from 47 yards out to extend the lead even further. After a blocked punt Springtown was set up with excellent field position. It only took two plays for Hill to find Hayden Murrell for a five-yard score to make it 42-0 at the halftime break.
The clock ran continuously throughout the second half, and the Porcupines scored twice more on offense, and added a safety. Hill threw to Brayden Butler to open the half for the first score. Then in the fourth quarter, Riverside lined up to punt but had a bad snap that went out of the back of the end zone.
That made the score 51-0. With the backups in the game, Layton Murrell scored one final touchdown for good measure on a five-yard keeper to bring the final score to 58-0.
Springtown (5-1, 2-0) will look to continue its winning streak next week at home against Fort Worth Eastern Hills (1-4, 1-0). Meanwhile, Carter-Riverside (1-5, 0-2) will look to get its first district win against Southwest (1-4, 0-1) next Thursday.
