Melissa took Game 1 of its Class 5A Region 2 semifinal series against Frisco Wakeland 2-0 on Wednesday. Game 2 is Thursday night at Frisco Emerson HS. The Cardinals improved to 33-2-1.

Freshman Lulu Adrian hit a home run, senior Emily Johnson had an RBI triple and junior Michigan State commit Alex Starr threw a four-hit shutout and struck out six.

Adrian picked up her 21st home run of the season – breaking the Dallas single season record. The previous record was set in 2022 by Allen’s Sami Hood (20). Adrian’s teammate sophomore Kennedy Bradley has 20 while junior Texas commit Caigan Crabtree has 18.

The Cardinals have set the state record with 87 long balls on the year.

Wakeland sophomore pitcher Jordan Mcnees pitched well in the loss – going all seven innings while allowing five hits, three walks and striking out four. The Wolverines dropped to 24-8.

Grandview’s Morgan Holliday (21 in 2022) has the DFW record. Other notable hitters include Burleson Centennial’s Bailey Lindemuth (19 in 2022), Forney’s Trinity Cannon (18 in 2018) and Wylie’s Mary Stephens (19 in 2011).
