Cleveland All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett entered the final week of the regular season needing one sack to break the NFL single season record.
Facing rival Cincinnati on the road – Garrett got the record breaking sack in the fourth quarter. The Browns won on a game-winning field goal 20-18 to end their season 5-12.
Garrett got to Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow for his 23rd sack – a new NFL record – that broke the previous mark that was held by both TJ Watt of Pittsburgh and former New York Giant and Hall Of Famer Michael Strahan.
Watt (2021) and Strahan (2001) both had 22.5 sacks.
The Browns selected Garrett with the 1st overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Garrett was a 5-star player from Arlington Martin HS and rated the #1 D-End by several media outlets. As a senior with Martin, Garrett had 19.5 sacks and was awarded the Tom Landry Award as the top football player in North Texas.
Garrett spent three seasons at Texas A&M – finishing with 32.5 sacks and 48.5 tackles for loss in 36 career games. As a true freshman, Garrett was consensus Freshman All-American by USA Today.
Prior to this season, Garrett is a 4x First-Team All-Pro and 2x Second-Team All-Pro. Additionally he was NFL Defensive MVP in 2023 and has reached the Pro Bowl seven times. Entering the week, Garrett had recorded 400+ tackles in his NFL career with 124.5 sacks and 23 forced fumbles. With his sack on Sunday, it gives Garrett 125.5 for his career – putting him into a tie for 20th in NFL history.
