Just hours after South Oak Cliff won its third Class 5A D2 state championship in the past four years, a football player shot a teammate Saturday night.

WFAA reported that Xavier Mayfield was the player that shot his teammate, who was taken to the hospital. His status is unknown at this point.

SOC defeated Richmond Randle 35-19 on Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The Golden Bears were playing in their fifth straight title game. They won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022, and then lost to PNG in 2023. Randle beat SOC in last year’s final.

According to WFAA, police responded to a call around 9:30 pm in southwest Dallas. Mayfield, who had an interception in the first quarter vs Randle on Saturday, told police that he shot the victim by accident with a rifle. The shot hit the victim in the neck. Mayfield told the police the safety was on. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, per WFAA. His bond is $50,000 in Dallas County Jail.

The Bears finished the season 15-1.

Mikail Trotter was voted Offensive MVP with Jamarion Phillips taking home Defensive MVP honors.
