FORT WORTH – Two years ago, Pilot Point went 0-10 and snapped a streak of six straight playoff appearances.
Roughly three months after the season, came in Pilot Point alum Chad Worrell, a 1990 graduate.
Worrell brought home a playoff win last season plus four wins. Now he’s got his Bearcats in the second round again and looking strong.
Running back Drevion James rushed for two 60+ yard touchdowns as Pilot Point opened the 2025 playoffs with a 45-13 win over the West Trojans during their Class 3A D1 bi district game on Thursday from Clark Stadium.
The Bearcats (9-2) have playoff wins in back to back years for the first time since 2019-2020 and their nine wins are most since winning 10 in 2020.
They advance to the area round next week to face the winner of Friday’s contest between Commerce and Jefferson
West ends 7-4.
After forcing a West punt, the Bearcats ate up nearly five minutes before settling for a 24 yard field goal from kicker Anthony Torres.
Pilot Point was able to convert on third and short early in the drive and then got a big run into the red zone from leading rusher Josh Chumley.
The Trojans responded with a 34 yard touchdown run by Ayden Rideout to take a 7-3 lead with 4:26 left in the quarter.
On the next play from scrimmage, James took the toss from QB Garrett Evans and broke through the D for a 66 yard touchdown and 10-7 lead.
Lane Eft intercepted a West pass attempt which didn’t turn into points, Pilot Point was still up three after 12 minutes.
Pilot Point missed a field goal at the 7:47 mark of the second quarter that would have extended the lead to 13-7, however just about three minutes later, the Bearcats had another 1-play scoring drive as James ran one in from 68 yards to go up 17-7.
As James was the spark in the first half, fellow back Caden Davis was that in the second half.
David got behind a West linebacker and caught a 40 yard touchdown pass from Evans to help extend Pilot Point’s lead to 24-7 in the third quarter.
On the next possession, David scampered in on a 50 yard touchdown run to make it 31-7.
Carter Lock added a short TD run and Pilot Point led 38-7 after three quarters. The big play on that scoring drive was a 46 yard pass and catch from David Pickrel to Hunter Newman in the middle of the field.
Both teams scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
