BOYD – Ponder junior Joshua Hickman made a 47-yard field goal as time expired to send the Lions past Boyd 32-29 in their District 4-3A Division 1 opener on Friday night to remain undefeated at 4-0.

The Yellowjackets fell to 3-2 and 0-1.

Boyd’s defense forced a punt and the Jackets got the ball back at their own 31 with 4:30 left in the fourth quarter. They got to midfield on fourth and 10 with Ponder taking its final timeout.

Boyd lined up in punt formation, but faked it – completing a pass that was short of the first down marker. Ponder completed a couple of pass attempts to set up Hickman’s attempt with 1 seconds left on the clock.

Ponder will host Vernon in Week 6 while Boyd travels to Vernon in Week 7 after its bye week.

Both teams scored quick on their opening drives.

Layton Wheeler caught a pass from QB Cash Selby and did the rest – finding the end zone for a Boyd touchdown with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

Ponder responded with a touchdown less than a minute later.

QB Tyson Price called the keeper and scored on a long touchdown to tie the game.

Six minutes later and the Yellowjackets went back in front on a tough run by Selby.

The Lions were able to recover a fumble at the Boyd 36 and score a touchdown when Price connected with Rece Faulkner. However, the 2-point run was no good leaving Boyd ahead 14-13 early in the second quarter.

On the ensuing Boyd drive, Maddox Parks moved the chains on fourth and 3, and a few plays later Selby called his number again for his second rushing touchdown to extend the Jackets’ lead to 21-13 midway through the period.

Ponder got into Boyd territory, but costly penalties and two sacks by Parks pushed the marker to fourth and 30. Brylon Nobles got the third sack of the drive for the Jackets’ D to help Boyd get the ball back on downs.

Boyd led 21-13 at halftime.

Another penalty on the Lions midway through the third set them up deep in their terrority, but a Terrize Mills Jr. caught a pass from Price and broke a tackle that resulted in a long TD. After a successful conversion, the game was tied at 21 with four minutes left in the third.

The Lions grabbed their first lead, 29-21, with two minutes left in the third quarter. Ponder missed a field goal attempt with 10 minutes to play.

Boyd got the ball into the red zone with 7:30 left. Parks picked up a first down at the 1.

Aiden Young punched it in and caught the 2-point pass from Selby that tied the game at 29-29 with 6:30 on the clock.
