After a two hour weather delay, 6A #2 North Crowley held off DeSoto 36-27 in non-district on Friday night. The Panthers improved to 2-0 while the Eagles dropped to 0-2.
North Crowley, which won the Class 6A state championship last season, led 29-27 with under two minutes before getting a 6-yard touchdown run from Jayden Shaw. The scored pushed the lead to nine with 1:54 to play.
The drive lasted nearly seven minutes (15 plays, 71 yards).
DeSoto was able to get to the NC 16, but the Eagles’ drive stalled and the Panthers took over on downs with 26 seconds remaining.
Shaw scored twice as well as Kiante Ingram, who ran 26 times for 178 yards. DeSoto’s Sarod Baker led the Eagles with 161 yards rushing and one touchdown. He also passed for 145 yards.
It only took DeSoto 1:13 to grab a 7-0 lead as Baker connected with Antron Edmundson for 56 yards and then LeMarcus Summers scored from the 6.
The Panthers matched it with 62 yards in eight plays.
Ingram scored from the 4 and it was 7-7 with eight minutes left in the first quarter.
But DeSoto went ahead 21-7 late in the second quarter on touchdowns from Summers and Edmundson. North Crowley QB Demarcus Harris came in and threw a TD pass to Kade Smith to get the Panthers within seven at the intermission.
North Crowley took the lead 22-21 in the third on a Shaw TD and successful two-point conversion. Then lightning hit and the game was delayed for two hours before starting back up after 11 pm.
The NC lead grew to 30-21 midway through the third on an Ingram rushing TD. Baker scored a DeSoto TD from 33 yards but the PAT was missed and the Panthers led 30-27 with 2:39 left in the third.
North Crowley will play Guyer in Week 2 while DeSoto looks for its first win of the season against Corpus Christi Miller.
