Mansfield Lake Ridge, which lost to Frisco Reedy 61-7 in the 2024 opener, secured a big game-sealing interception late in the fourth quarter to hang on and beat the Lions 31-27 on Thursday night.
The Eagles have struggled recently with a 1-9 record last season and 0-10 in 2023.
Setting up with goal-to-go at the Lake Ridge 6, a Reedy pass was intercepted by Jared Henry in the end zone for a touch-back. Lake Ridge QB DeShawn Edwards set up the quarterback kneel in victory formation.
Reedy is coming off three consecutive seasons with 10+ wins.
But the Lions, who were predicted to finish second in district by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, only brought back four starters on offense and three on defense. Lake Ridge returned eight and six, respectively.
DCTF has Lake Ridge finishing last in District 3-6A.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter with Lake Ridge’s Jaiden Cotton and Reedy’s Jarrett Walker scoring. Lincoln Harn hit Aaron Niermann for a 24-yard TD that gave Reedy a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. Cotton scored on a 3-yard run to help Lake Ridge even the score at 14-14.
The Lions led 17-14 at halftime.
Cotton rushed for over 150 yards while Edwards tossed for 250+ through the air to lead the Eagles. Harn accounted for over 350 yards to lead Reedy, but was intercepted twice. Niermann led all receivers with 165 yards and one touchdown.
