Irwin Garcia said that one of the things that he liked about Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis was the football community, how involved they were and how much they wanted to win. He took a step in the right direction after coaching the Eagles to a 26-14 win over FW South Hills in the season opener on Thursday night at Handley Field.

The Eagles snapped a 46-game losing streak and won their first game since 2019.

Elijah Hernandez accounted for four touchdowns and 210 total yards as DHJ rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit. The defense picked it up in the second half – holding the Scorpions scoreless in the third and fourth quarters.

Isaiah Lewis had seven catches for 82 yards and Aaron Chavez and Dominic Davis each caught a touchdown pass.

Defensively, the Eagles forced three turnovers.

Davis had 12 tackles, four for a loss and one forced fumble.

The Eagles will face FW North Side in Week 2. Garcia, who was hired in the summer, spent the previous 11 years at North Side HS. As an assistant, he helped coach the Steers – in 2019 – to their first playoff game in 40 years.

Additionally, the junior varsity team won its first game in seven years, on Wednesday. Garcia said it was the first time in 5 or 6 years that the JV team at DHJ even had a Week 1 football game.
