Walk off in extra innings sends Lovejoy baseball past Frisco Wakeland in regional final opener

Jayce Seaber hit the walk-off single on the first pitch of his at bat in the bottom of the eighth inning to send Lovejoy past Frisco Wakeland 3-2 during Game 1 of their Class 5A Division 2 Region 2 champ series on Wednesday night.

Lovejoy (29-6) looks to close the series out in Game 2 at 7 pm Thursday from Prosper Rock Hill. Wakeland (28-7) can force a Game 3 at 1:30 pm Friday from Rock Hill.

TCU commit Logan Corley hit a 1 out single to right for the Leopards in the eighth and Dylan Sears reached on a fielder’s choice. Reese Ogden hit a two out single and Garrett Hutchins (Air Force) was intentionally to load the bases for Seaber.

Corley nearly had the complete game but hit his 110 pitch limit – going 7 2/3 innings with two runs on seven hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Brett Hill came in and got the final out in the top of the eighth.

Lovejoy beat Midlothian Heritage in three games during the regional semifinals while Wakeland swept Corsicana to reach the regional championship.

Wakeland had a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run from Landon Spurr and then Spurr hit an RBI single with two outs in the sixth to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead.

Corley hit a lead off double for Lovejoy in the sixth but Wakeland turned a double play. Ogden singled to right and Hutchins tied the game with a two-run home run to right. Both teams went down in order during the seventh inning.

Max Vetkoetter went 7 2/3 innings for Wakeland with six hits allowed and three strikeouts.
