Aubrey, Grapevine open softball state semifinal series with wins over Snyder, Hallsville

Grapevine 2, Hallsville 1

Bella Vaquera and Gisele Rayngay hit RBI doubles in the fifth inning to help send Grapevine to a 2-1 win over Hallsville during Game 1 of their Class 5A D2 state semifinal series on Wednesday.

Game 2 is set for 2 pm Saturday at Forney HS.

This is Grapevine’s first trip to the state semis in program history. Another win will send the Mustangs to the state championship game next Friday May 30 at the University of Texas in Austin.

The Mustangs beat Lubbock Cooper in three games for the Region 1 title.

South Dakota State signee Bella MacMahon pitched a complete game with five hits allowed and three strikeouts.

Hallsville loaded the bases in the second and got its only run with an RBI walk. The Bobcats loaded the bases in the fifth but MacMahon got a grounder to Rayngay (Tarleton State) at short. Another grounder to short in the bottom of the seventh closed in out with the game winning run at first.

Aubrey 2, Snyder 0

Texas Woman’s University signee Mya Cherry tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts as the Chaparrals beat out Snyder 2-0 in Game 1 of their Class 4A D2 state semifinal series on Wednesday.

Game 2 is set for 7 pm Thursday at Stephenville HS.

This is Aubrey’s second trip to the state semis in the past three seasons. The Chaps beat Canton in two games for the Region 2 title. Another win will send them to the state championship game next Friday May 30 at the University of Texas in Austin.

Aubrey scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Molly Reid led off the fifth with a single to center and Cherry doubled down to right to put runners in scoring position. After a walk loaded the bases and Snyder got the second out, Sophia Place drew a four pitch walk for an RBI and 1-0 lead.

Ole Miss commit Abby Buxton led off the sixth with her 12th home run of the year.

Snyder had six runners on and three in scoring position. Cherry retired the order in the bottom of the seventh.
