Keith Medford has been the only softball coach in Guyer’s program history since the school opened in 2006. He’s led the Wildcats to the state tournament three times including the last two years. They finished as 6A state runner-up in 2023.
In his 27th season as a head coach, Medford has captured yet another career milestone.
The Wildcats, #2 in the latest GM Sports DFW 6A rankings, defeated Lewisville 16-0 in District 5-6A action on Friday night – giving Medford his 600th career win.
Entering the season, Medford had the second most wins among active coaches in DFW.
Guyer improved to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in district.
The Wildcats poured it on with 14 runs in the top of the second inning. Megan DeWitt reached on an error in the first and Aubriella Martinez scored to give Guyer a 1-0 lead.
18 batters came up to the box for Guyer in the second.
The first 10 Wildcats reached base as the lead quickly went to 9-0. Emma Richard drove in two with a single to right field and Cali Parham came home on a Lewisville error. Bri Williams laid down a bunt single and Richard scored to make it 5-0.
Annaleeia Martinez and Finley Montgomery hit back-to-back singles and DeWitt hit a liner to center that drove in two that extended the lead to 8-0. Chloe O’Brien made it 9-0 before the first out of the inning with a single to right field.
Richard and Williams added RBI hits and DeWitt capped the inning off with a bases-clearing double.
Williams led Guyer with three hits while four other Wildcats had two hits.
Richard drove in three and DeWitt had a game high five RBIs.
Mackie Ambriz and Montgomery combined to throw five innings with two hits and seven strikeouts.
Medford is in his 20th season with the Guyer program and has turned it into a powerhouse in DFW. He led the Wildcats to three state tournament appearances – the first coming in 2010.
After several great seasons, but coming up short of Austin, he led Guyer back to the big stage in 2023 and 2024. The 2023 season marked the first time Guyer played in the championship game, but the Wildcats lost to Pearland 4-2 in the 6A final. They beat Cypress Bridgeland 6-3 in the semifinals that year.
Guyer returned to state in 2024 – beating Keller again in the Region 1 final.
But they were edged out by eventual state champ Weslaco 5-3 in 13 innings during the semifinals.
The Wildcats won 37 games each season – posting a remarkable 70-7 combined record the two previous years.
Among all the great players Medford coached, one was his daughter Morgan, who played shortstop from 2016 to 2019 and was regarded as one of the best defensive players in DFW all-time. Morgan went on to play at Tarleton State and North Texas.
Morgan joined her dad’s coaching staff last summer – and also helps coach volleyball.
Medford’s son and Morgan’s brother Tyler is also a softball coach at Guyer.
