The city of Fort Worth has won a state championship in girls basketball again…the drought is over!

It’s the first time since Dunbar won in 2007.

Boswell, a school in Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD but in the Fort Worth city limits, defeated Fort Bend Hightower 51-42 during the Class 6A Division 2 state championship game on Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

The Pioneers, #2 in the TABC 6A state rankings, ends 39-2 with a 15-game winning streak. Their only losses came vs Denton Guyer 54-51 on Dec. 3 and Conway (Ark.) 44-40 on Dec. 28.

The team beat #6 Lancaster in the state semifinals on Tuesday. Boswell also beat Southlake Carroll, EP Eastwood, Braswell and Wolfforth Frenship in the playoffs.

It was their first appearance in the final four since 1977.

Seleste Massey was voted state champ MVP against Hightower with 16 points on 7 of 12 shooting, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 steals and 2 blocks in 30 minutes of play.

Sydney Durrah had a team-high 17 points.

Camille, a Miami signee, added 12 points on 6 of 13 shooting and 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Neither team could buy a basket in the first quarter.

A layup from Williams was the first of the game at the 4:26 mark.

Durrah added a 3-pointer about a minute later and Boswell led 5-0. Hightower took an 8-7 lead on a three from Kimora Denkins. Both teams traded one more bucket and Hightower led 10-9 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was tightly contested.

It was 15-all until the Pioneers closed the period out with 10 of the next 13 points including the final six points. Haleigh Jackson and Williams made layups and Massey tipped in a miss to beat the buzzer as Boswell led 25-18 at the intermission.

The lead quickly grew to 13 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Massey and Durrah. Boswell’s largest lead of the quarter was 38-23 on another three from Durrah with 1:07 left on the clock.

Hightower managed to get within single digits midway through the fourth, but could never get the margin under nine points.

Boswell outscored Hightower in the paint 32-18 and won the steals and assists battle at 12-5 and 14-7, respectively.
