MANSFIELD – It’s a good homecoming weekend for the Legacy Broncos following their impressive 55-14 win over Weatherford in District 3-6A on Friday night at Newsom Stadium.

In a matchup of winless teams, Legacy picks up its first win of the season and improves to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in district while the Kangaroos dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in district.

It was a quick start for the Broncos as the defense made a play on the first snap from scrimmage. With the ball at its own 8-yard line, Weatherford rolled out and threw an interception to UNT commit Jaden Manning, who returned it 13 yards for a touchdown only six seconds into the contest.

The Roos would come back strong though with an 8 1/2 minute drive that lasted 18 plays and went for 73 yards. They only converted 1 of 4 third downs on the drive, but were good on all three fourth down attempts. Running back Brennen Boehl gained five yards on the first fourth down while Xavier Craven had a 2-yard run on the second one. QB Brooks Kerbow scored on fourth-and-goal from the 1 to pull the game even at 7-7 with 3:10 left in the first quarter.

Legacy went back in front 14-7 following a 52-yard drive capped by a 2-yard TD run from J-uan Harrison Jr. about two minutes later. The Broncos’ defense got their second TD return in three drive as Trenton Hamann picked a pass off and returned it 55 yards for a 21-7 lead with 10:39 left in the second quarter.

Things continued to go downhill for the Weatherford offense as the Roos coughed up the football for the third time in four drives as Hamann forced a fumble and Kistyn Odom jumping on it. Legacy marched the ensuing possession 42 yards as QB Nathan Wilson hit Jackson Carr for a 21-yard TD and 28-7 lead midway through the frame.

Weatherford turned the ball over on downs and the Broncos found the end zone one more time before the intermission on Manning’s 13-yard touchdown run with 3:18 left in the half. The Kangaroos gained 125 yards on 38 plays and held on to the ball for over 15 minutes in the first half while Legacy had 138 yards on 19 plays with just under eight minutes of possession.

Legacy opened the third quarter with its sixth touchdown of the night – a 16-yard TD pass and catch from Wilson to Dandre Thomas with 9:32 on the clock. The Broncos got two more touchdowns on the night – a 9-yard TD from Wilson to Layne Thompson and a 1-yard TD run from Lewis Wilkerson.

Weatherford did score one time in the second half on a 15-play drive.

The Roos picked up six first downs and were 1 of 1 on fourth down.

Craven got into the end zone on a 1-yard run.

Weatherford was only 3 of 12 on third down, but converted all five fourth down attempts.
