High school football is officially underway! With the first weekend now in the rearview mirror, it is time to name Parker County’s team of the week, decided by the fans on X (formerly twitter).
The four teams up for the vote were the Azle Hornets (41-34 over Abilene Cooper), the Brock Eagles (27-7 over Decatur), the Peaster Greyhounds (10-0 over Tolar), and the Azle Christian Crusaders (60-14 over Greenville Christian.)
After 24 hours of fans being able to vote on social media, Peaster took the title by over 18% of the vote over second place Brock and rightfully so. While Brock’s introduction into class 4A was impressive with a 27-7 win over Decatur, the Greyhounds got arguably the most significant win in program history to date. While it was not a district matchup and will ultimately mean nothing as far as playoff races go, for just a few minutes Peaster was in the state spotlight with this massive upset.
The Greyhounds have opened the season against Tolar for the past three years. The first two resulted in losses, and after the Rattlers made a state title appearance in 2023 the same was expected to open the 2024 season. However after a lengthy delay to the start of the game, the Greyhounds pulled off a remarkable upset not just by defeating Tolar, but by shutting them out. Not only is the win and shutout impressive, but it is even more so when one considers that Tolar was a 26-point favorite coming into the game.
Quarterback Kaden Albert scored the lone touchdown in the game to help put the Greyhounds over the hump. He finished 7-13 through the air for 73 yards, and 20 carries for 14 yards rushing. His one score came on the ground.
This is the first time in three years that the Greyhounds have started the season with a win, and their very first win over a state-ranked opponent. For such a significant win, and because the people have spoken, the Peaster Greyhounds are the first ever GM Sports Media Parker County Team of the Week!
