Aidan Poole rushed for nearly 100 yards as Wakeland held off Grapevine 14-10 in the season opener on Thursday in Frisco.
Poole had 97 yards on eight carries. His touchdown run from 55 yards in the second quarter helped the Wolverines get a 7-3 lead which they took into the intermission.
QB Jayden Maples connected with Grayson Myer on a 49-yard pass and catch that gave Wakeland a 14-3 lead in the third quarter.
Jaime Sanchez’s 3-yard TD run pulled the Mustangs within 14-10 early in the fourth quarter. Grapevine totaled 210 yards on offense while Wakeland posted 224 yards.
Sanchez finished with 31 yards on nine carries while Jullun Contreras led all players with 25 carries and 134 yards for the Mustangs.
Maples went 10 of 20 for 133 yards for the Wolverines. He added 29 yards on five carries. Myer finished with three grabs for 79 yards.
Grapevine (0-1) looks to bounce back when it hosts Birdville in Week 2 while Wakeland (1-0) will travel to The Colony.
