Emerson and McKinney were nearly identical as both teams had 13 first downs during Thursday night’s season opener. Emerson finished with 245 yards total offense while McKinney ended with 241.
The Emerson Mavericks allowed just one touchdown in the second quarter on their way to a 17-7 win over the Lions at the Ford Center in Frisco.
Emerson (1-0) led 7-0 with 5:31 left in the first quarter when QB DJ Shelton connected with Blake McLane on a 9-yard touchdown. McKinney (0-1) tied it at 7 with 10:12 left in the second quarter when Jeremiah Daoud hit Khristian Mackintrush for 20 yards.
Running back Kameron Lockhart scored from 31 yards out to push Emerson ahead 14-7 and John Pacheco added a 27-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.
Shelton was 10 of 20 passing for 103 yards for Emerson and added 65 yards rushing on 10 carries. Lockhart added 58 yards on 13 carries. Kelton Wafer made two catches for 60 yards
Jy’dell Pearson led McKinney with 96 yards on five catches. Gavin Menefee added 58 yards on 16 carries and Daoud was 21 of 38 for 196 yards passing for the Lions.
Emerson will look to go 2-0 vs Frisco Reedy in Week 2.
McKinney will play Garland Lakeview Centennial.
