SOFTBALL PLAYOFF RECAP: Keller ties series with Guyer, Grandview blows out Franklin

KELLER 2, DENTON GUYER 1: Following its worst loss of the season, the Indians bounced back to take Game 2 over the Wildcats in the Class 6A Region 1 championship on Thursday at Coppell. Game 3 is scheduled for 730 Saturday at the Coppell Softball & Baseball Complex by the ninth grade campus.

Guyer scored five runs in the top of the first inning on its way to an 11-1 victory.

Keller starter Sadie Beck suffered the loss, but rebounded on Thursday with one run on eight hits, three walks and nine strikeouts. She improved to 5-0 this postseason in elimination games.

Guyer’s Finley Montgomery also allowed eight hits and struck out four.

Erin Peterson hit a two-out triple in the Guyer first, but Beck got a grounder to short that ended the threat. Keller catcher Kaiya Fabela hit a one out single, but Montgomery got a grounder to short and a strikeout. Jenny Robledo hit a double to left in the Guyer second and Beck got a grounder to short and a strikeout. Keller scored in the second when Annsley Groce and Lauren Kavanaugh got back to back hits. With Groce on third, she scored on a wild pitch to give Keller a 1-0 lead.

Bri Williams had a lead off single in the Guyer third before Beck retired the side. Robledo hit a two out double in the fourth and Beck got a fly ball to center. Guyer tied it in the top of the fifth when Jordan Osborne hit a lead off single to left field and Kaylynn Jones driving in courtesy runner Emma Richard. Peterson drew a walk to put two on and two outs before a pop up to left ended the inning.

Guyer got back to back walks in the sixth with one out and Beck struck a batter out and a force out at second to keep the game tied. Carley Genzer led the Keller sixth with a double to center. After the next batter got out, Genzer advanced to third and scored on a single by Groce to center.

The Wildcats put pressure on in the seventh with lead off singles from Kaylynn Jones and Lauryn Jones. But Beck shut the door with her ninth strikeout, a pop fly to center and pop fly to shortstop Mackenna Jackson.

GRANDVIEW 10, FRANKLIN 0: Superstar sophomore Madi Doty tossed a one-hit shutout and mowed down 11 batters as the Zebras blew out the Lions in Game 1 of the Class 3A Region 3 championship on Thursday at West HS. Game 2 is 4 pm Saturday back at West.

Doty has struck out 48 batters during the last four games.

She had 37 Ks in 20 innings during the regional semifinals against Kountze.

Doty also did well at the plate – hitting the walk off two-run home run to end the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Doty shut down a Franklin offense that came in averaging 12.6 runs per game.

The first four Grandview batters reached base in the first inning which started with back to back singles by Jaley James and SJ Mann. Doty was hit by a pitch and James scored on a walk by Bella Jeter. Claire Baker hit a pop fly with two outs and Mann scored on a Franklin error.

Mann and Doty hit a pair of two out singles in the second and Jeter drove both in with a double to center. Doty and Kat Gordy both hit RBI singles in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0.

James hit an RBI double in the fifth and two batters later Doty drilled a pitch to deep left to end it.
