SOFTBALL PLAYOFF RECAP (5/16): Denton Guyer rallies in the seventh to even series against SL Carroll

Guyer was down to its final three outs while Southlake Carroll was on the verge of an upset over the Wildcats in the Class 6A Region 1 semifinals on Thursday.

Carroll won in Wednesday’s opener – a 9-5 victory over the state’s second-best team in 6A and the #1 team in the DFW metroplex.

The Dragons, who beat Timber Creek in the regional quarterfinals last week, scored first in the second inning on an Emmy May triple. Pitcher Sinclaire Robinson, who starred in all three games vs Creek especially in the finale, kept the Wildcats off the board all night. She also got help from her defense.

With the bases loaded in the third and one out, Jordan Stewart fielded a ball at third, stepped on her bag for the force and threw it to first for the inning ending double play. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Bri Williams reached on an error to first and a run came across to make it 2-1. Oregon signee and second baseman Kaylynn Jones hit an RBI double and Williams scored to tie the game at 2.

Then senior Lauryn Jones (Howard signee) laid down a bunt with a runner on second. It was good for a single, but the on the play to first, Carroll committed another error and Kaylynn Jones scored the walk-off run to even the series.

Guyer made the UIL state tournament last season and finished runner-up in the state championship game. The two teams met in this round last year with Guyer sweeping the series.

The winner on Friday will advance to the regional final against the winner between Keller and Plano West. The one-game playoff is set for Friday night at the Coppell Softball Complex. Keller and SLC are both in District 4-6A.
