Guyer scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as the Wildcats beat the Keller Indians 11-1 in five to grab a 1-0 lead in the Class 6A Region 1 championship on Wednesday at Coppell. Game 2 is scheduled for 730 pm Thursday at the Coppell Softball Field which is located at the ninth grade campus.
The two teams are meeting in the regional final for the second straight season.
Guyer won last year in three games and finished in the 6A state championship game.
Keller, coming off a one-game playoff 10-0 vs Plano West in last week’s regional semifinals, got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning when BYU commit Kaiya Fabela hit a solo home run for the 1-0 lead. But the lead didn’t last long as Guyer’s first five batters reached base and the Wildcats led 5-1 entering the second.
Oregon signee hit a lead off double and scored on a double by Lauryn Jones (Howard). Erin Peterson (Texas State) added an RBI single, followed by a two-run single from Karen Galaviz (Dodge City CC) and RBI single from Bri Williams (New Mexico commit). Guyer pitcher Finley Montgomery intentionally walked Fabela in the third to load the bases with two outs, but a pop fly to right ended the threat.
Jenny Robledo had a single in the bottom of the third and scored on a two-run home run from Jordan Osborne (Illinois-Chicago) to give Guyer a 7-1 lead.
Montgomery issued a lead off walk to Addi Clark in the top of the fifth, but tossed back-to-back strikeouts and retired the side.
Galaviz hit a lead off double and scored on Keller’s third error to make it 8-1 before the game went into a lightning delay. When the teams returned, Guyer loaded the bases and Lauryn Jones ended the game by run-rule with a single to right that cleared the bases.
Lauryn Jones finished with four RBI and Montgomery finished in the circle with two hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
