===========================================

Azle starting pitcher Adrianna Wiedeman hurled a three-hit shutout and struck out four batters as the Hornets blanked the Spartans 1-0 in Game 2 of their Class 5A Region 1 area round series. Centennial won Game 1 by a score of 10-0 on Wednesday.

The Spartans, district champs out of 8-5A, put pressure on in the bottom of the seventh inning looking to tie or win the series. A lead off walk was followed by back-to-back strikeouts from Wiedeman. A second walk and wild pitch put runners on second and third with two outs.

Liv Martin, who hit a walk off home run in the final regular season game against Midlothian to win the district championship, came up to the plate with the game-tying run 60 feet away. Martin hit a 1-1 pitch up the middle but Azle shortstop Kaylee Parrish (Hardin-Simmons commit) got to the ball in time and fired a throw to first baseman Bella Tipton for the final out.

Game 3 is set for 5 pm Friday at Chisholm Trail HS.

Ema Lehr hit a one-out single in the top of the second and scored one batter later on a double to right center by Corynne Barone. The Spartans had another chance to score in the bottom of the sixth. They had two runners on when third baseman Allison Smith caught a hard liner to end the threat.

Centennial starting pitcher Ava Ellis allowed one run on five hits in five innings. Bailey Lindemuth (Texas Tech) came in relief and didn’t allow a hit and struck out three in two innings.

Azle finished the regular season runner-up in District 5-5A.
