Max Stammel needed to get the final out in the bottom of the seventh inning or he was going to be replaced. He had 108 pitches with the final batter coming to the plate. He hurled five pitches and back-to-back-back strikes to finish off the Vikings 2-0 in District 7-6A on Tuesday night.
The pitch limit is 110 – however – you’re allowed to finish the final batter if you’re under the count. HP improved to 12-9-1 overall with its third straight win and 7-1 in district play. Nimitz dropped to 5-6 and 15-8 overall.
Stammel, a Duke signee, tossed a 1-hit shutout and struck out 18 batters.
He threw 71 strikes and allowed three walks.
Both of the Scots’ runs came in the top of the third inning. The first two batters reached base with an error and hit by pitch. Matty Chan laid down a bunt to third and a second Nimitz error plated both runs for the 2-0 lead.
Stammel struck out the first six batters faced and after two walks in the third, he picked up two more strikeouts and a fly out to center. He allowed his only hit with a single in the fourth and led the inning off with a walk to give the Vikings two runners, but back-to-back Ks ended the threat.
He also struck out the side in order in the fifth and got two more in the sixth and seventh. Stammel is a senior lefty and is the reigning District MVP in 7-6A.
