Come Saturday in Georgetown, the first two state championships will feature not one DFW school, not two – but four from the Metroplex as Wakeland and Midlothian both shut out their opponents in the state semifinals on Thursday.
Wakeland (19-5-3) and Midlothian (24-2-3) will kick off for the 5A boys title at 1:30 pm Saturday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown ISD. The 5A girls championship will be before at 11 am with Wakeland (25-0-2) taking on Colleyville Heritage (24-0-2).
========================================
Not much has changed for the Wakeland boys soccer program as the Wolverines scored a goal in each half and held off undefeated Leander Glenn 2-0. Wakeland is making the trip to state for the ninth time and will go for its sixth championship.
The Wolverines are at state for the 8th time in last 10 tournaments. There was no tournament in 2020 because of COVID. They won state titles in 2010, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.
Glenn ends the season 29-1-1.
Both squads were nearly identical with seven shots apiece, three saves and three corner kicks. Wakeland had the slight edge 5-3 in shots on goal. Adrian Rodrigues was in goal for the Wolverines. Glenn got a shot off and a corner in the 3rd minute. The shot was blocked. Wakeland took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.
After a Glenn foul, Cameron Warner sent a free kick and it was headed in by Johnathan Loop near the corner flag. The Grizzlies got a shot off in the 34th minute, but it was saved by Rodrigues. Wakeland kept the pressure on with two corners in the first 10 minutes after the intermission. The Wolverines upped the lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute when Maximillian Parra sent a corner and Jack Minsky chested the ball in to the near post. Glenn got a shot in the 56th minute that hit the post.
Glenn only got one shot off in the final 25 minutes.
Wakeland is tied for third all-time boys and girls with nine state appearances. Klein boys and Highland Park girls are tied for the most with 13.

After a scoreless first half, Midlothian scored three times in the second half to down Baytown Goose Creek Memorial 3-0. This is the first trip to the state tournament for the program. They clinched a spot after winning the Region 1 championship last week in Wichita Falls.
The Panthers started the scoring in the 53rd minute on a header by Marcus Manu. The assist came from Caden Naizer, who sent a cross into the box and over the Goose Creek goalkeeper and Manu finished it off near the line.
Goose Creek got two shots off – one going wide left and one being saved by Midlo keeper Kyle Allen. The Panthers extended the lead to 2-nil in the 58th minute from Naizer, who scored from 25 yards out to the near right post.
Naizer won last week’s GM SPORTS MEDIA DFW Boys Soccer Player Of The Week after netting two goals vs Saginaw in the regional quarterfinals including the game winner with 31 seconds left in regulation.
Goose Creek got two corners, but not another shot attempt the rest of the game. Midlo put the stamp on in the 78th minute. Landon Exley and Ayden Hildreth won a 2v1 with the GC keeper and Hildreth scored from 10 yards to the right post.
Allen finished with five saves.
