Goalkeeper Claire Manis made two saves in the shootout and Ava Yocum scored the game-clincher as Wakeland got by Rouse 4-2 in PKs during their Class 5A state semifinal match on Thursday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.

Wakeland (25-0-2) advances to an all DFW 5A championship where the Wolverines take on fellow undefeated and Region 1 champ Colleyville Heritage (24-0-2) at 11 am Saturday in Georgetown. CHHS beat Hendrickson 4-1 Thursday morning.

This is Wakeland’s fifth state appearance with all five in the championship game. The program won titles in 2011, 2018 and 2022, and lost in the 2021 final against Dripping Springs.

After both teams went scoreless in regulation and overtime, Rouse came up first in the shootout and Manis made her first save. She was followed by Wakeland taking a 1-0 lead on a PK from Morgan Landry. Rouse’s Kylie Snell and Wakeland’s Sofia Rodriguez scored in Round 2 and the Wolverines led 2-1.

Manis made a second save and Dilan Pistroius scored and it was 3-1. Rouse’s Lilly Arellano scored to get her team within 3-2 and needing a stop, but Yocum scored the goal off Rouse GK Kayla Hehenberger to send Wakeland to the title bout.

Wakeland out-shot Rouse 11-7 and 6-5 shots on goal. They had five corner kicks vs one for Rouse. Wolverine starting keeper Brooklynn Freeman made one save in the first half while Manis finished with four in 60 minutes of play.

Pistorius had three consecutive chances to put her team up 1-0 in the first overtime period with shots in the 83rd, 84th and 86th minutes. One was high, one was wide left and one was on goal but saved by Hehenberger.

Landry’s shot in the 88th minute was blocked.

Neither team had any action in the final 10 of overtime with one foul on Wakeland, a shot by Audrey Gilbert in the 93rd minute that hit the cross bar and a shot by Snell that was high.
