The Elks are on their third head football coach in as many years after the school district announced the hiring of Phillip Tanner on Monday.
Tanner takes over for Chad Worrell, who went to his alma mater Pilot Point in March.
Tanner spent the past two seasons at Fort Worth Southwest and led the Raiders to back-to-back 4-6 seasons. Prior to that, Tanner was at Burleson for two seasons as offensive coordinator under Jon Kitna, another former Dallas Cowboy.
A graduate from Dallas Kimball, Tanner starred in college at Middle Tennessee State before playing three seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys. In 2019, Tanner was with franchise as a special teams coordinator.
“This has been a dream of mine, and I’m excited to be the next head football coach here at Burleson High School. It’s such an honor, and I’m looking forward to laying a solid foundation and having a great season. Go Elks!” said Tanner in a press release.
