BASEBALL RECAP (4/23): Boswell’s Bell throws 2-hit shutout, Denton upsets Argyle

Boswell 7, Chisholm Trail 0: Junior Mason Bell threw a two-hit complete game and struck out nine as the Pioneers stayed perfect at 13-0 in District 3-6A on Tuesday night. Boswell has already locked up the district championship and playoff 1-seed. The final regular season game is scheduled for Friday night at Chisholm Trail HS. CT was officially eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. Bell helped his own cause with an RBI in the bottom of the first inning. Senior shortstop Sawyer Farr (Texas A&M commit) blasted a solo home run over the right field wall to extend the lead to 2-0 in the fifth. The Pioneers opened the game wide open with five runs in the sixth. A run came across after a CT error followed by an RBI triple by Xander Thacker. After Farr was intentionally walked, Coby McBride drove a pitch past the infield and into left for an RBI single. The ball got past the left fielder which turned it into a two-base error with another run scored to make it 6-0. Ray Corona hit a sac fly to left for another RBI and the final run of the game.

Denton 6, Argyle 4: The Broncos picked up their biggest win of the season to keep their playoff hopes alive. Denton is fifth place at 5-8. Denton Ryan sits in fourth at 6-6 as the Raiders play third place Colleyville Heritage (7-5) Wednesday and Friday. Argyle, ranked #8 in the TXHSB Class 5A state rankings, dropped to 10-3. Denton was able to score all six of its runs in the top of the second inning. Tim Scott singled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Jordan Gonzales. After a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice, Will Buchanan doubled to center to drive in three runs and make it 6-0. The Eagles got one back in the fourth and three in the fifth. The game-tying run came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Joseph Oliphant got two strikeouts and a liner to short to seal the upset win. Alden Armor started for Denton and allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings.

Pearce 5, Highland Park 0: Between the top two teams in District 7-6A (both came in with 13-1 records), the Mustangs bested the Scots to take over first place in the district standings. Pearce is 14-1 and clinches at least a share of the district title. Pearce can go outright and clinch #1 on Friday. HP can force a co-championship with a win. The Mustangs tacked on four runs in the top of the first inning with RBIs by AJ Ripley and Levi Rozenblum. Nash Hornberger drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Pearce got another off a passed ball. Carson Bailey was great in the circle with two hits allowed and 11 strikeouts in six innings of work.

Mansfield 10, DeSoto 1: The Tigers kept pace for the district lead and title after blowing out the Eagles in 11-6A. Mansfield is 10-3 and tied for first with Lake Ridge – the final regular season games on Friday. Trevor Berquist allowed one hit and struck out 10 for the Tigers. Mansfield led 4-0 after three innings. Aidan Simmons had two hits and drove in three. Jaxon Wylie went 3 for 3 with one RBI.

Flower Mound 3, Hebron 2: The Jaguars edged out the Hawks to capture the District 6-6A championship and playoff 1-seed. FM is 13-0 in district while Hebron dropped to 11-2. Flower Mound is also 29-3 overall and ranked #1 in the 6A state rankings. Josh Glaser allowed two unearned runs on six hits and struck out five in five innings. Zack James was perfect in two innings and struck out four. Minjae Seo took the loss for Hebron going 4 2/3 innings and allowed two earned on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Sam Distel drove in a run in the third inning and Adrian Rodriguez brought in another on a fielder’s choice to put FM up 2-0. Hebron pulled within 2-1 on an RBI double from Caleb Klibert in the fourth. Distel got another RBI single to push the lead to 3-1 in the fifth. PJ Crayton’s RBI double got the Hawks back within 3-2. Hebron went down in order during the bottom of the seventh.

Frisco 4, Frisco Lone Star 0: Landon Karrh threw a three-hit complete game shutout and struck out five to help the Raccoons to the District 9-5A championship. Frisco improved to 11-2 while Lone Star dropped to 9-4 – in a three way tie for second place with Frisco Wakeland and Frisco Reedy. Karrh threw 95 pitches and 66 strikes. Frisco scored all four runs in the top of the sixth inning. John Larkin sparked the Raccoons with a two-run home run.
