Soccer Playoff Roundup: Joshua girls knock off state champ Grapevine, Rockwall boys upset Wylie

GIRLS: Joshua 1, Grapevine 0 (4-1 PK) – The Owls won perhaps their biggest playoff game in program history – taking down the defending Class 5A state champ in a shootout in a Region 1 bi-district contest. Dillyn Hammons made two saves in PKs and Joshua scored all four of its attempts to knock out Grapevine, which won its first title last spring. Joshua will face Justin Northwest on Friday at Boswell.

BOYS: Rockwall 1, Wylie 0 – The Yellowjackets just needed one goal by Elliott Clement and their back-line and defense shut out the Pirates in Class 6A Region 2. Rockwall finished fourth in 10-6A while Wylie went 15-1 and won 9-6A. The Pirates wrapped up their season with a 22-3 record and were shut out for the first time this year. Rockwall will face Duncanville in the second round. D’ville beat Weiss 3-0.

GIRLS: FM Marcus 2, Allen 0 – After just doing enough to get into the playoffs, defending Class 6A state champ Marcus blanked 5-6A champ Allen in Region 1. Following a scoreless regulation, the Marauders scored five minutes into the first overtime when Savannah Wylie lined up a free kick from 40 yards and Maddie Hayes kicked in a deflection. Marcus added a second goal in the 95th minute on a 1v1 chance by Madi Patterson. Marcus will face JJ Pearce on Friday in Carrollton.

BOYS: Diamond Hill-Jarvis 5, Lake Worth 0 – Alejandro Ibarra scored one goal and added two assists as the Eagles shut down the Bullfrogs in Class 4A Region 1. DHJ will get Gatesville in Round 2. Reyes Medina got the clean sheet.

GIRLS: Lake Highlands 4, Arlington Lamar 0 – Evelyn Wilson and the Wildcats D shut out the Vikings in Class 6A Region 1 and advance to the second round for the first time in nine years. LHHS will face Flower Mound next after the Jaguars beat McKinney Boyd 4-2. Lake Highlands got goals from Dani Chaump, Katie Hoppers, Lila Brackin and Ashlyn Steele. Hoppers, Kacy Corcoran and Denise Garcia posted assists.

BOYS: Lake Highlands 2, Grand Prairie 1 – The Wildcats, who reached the regional tourney last season in Class 6A Region 1, came into the postseason #4 in 7-6A but earned the upset over 8-6A champ GP. LHHS scored goals from Kerry Najera and Mitch Williams. The Gophers end at 15-3-4.

GIRLS: SL Carroll 7, Crowley 0 – The #1 team in DFW opened the playoffs with a dominate showing over the Eagles in Class 6A Region 1. SLC, last year’s regional finalist, will face Midland in area. Presley Wilkerson scored one goal while the Dragons got two hat tricks by Kamdyn Fuller and Hannah Jordan.

BOYS: Frisco 1, Frisco Centennial 0 – Preston Licker scored in the early moments and the Raccoons hung on vs the Titans in Class 5A Region 2. Frisco will get Dallas Wilson next. The Raccoons finished third in 9-5A while Centennial came in with only two losses on the season.

GIRLS: Anna 6, Kaufman 1 – The Coyotes scored three times in both halves to take down the Lions in Class 4A Region 2. Anna (19-3), #2 in the final GM 4A rankings, will face North Dallas during the second round on Thursday in Plano. Ella Anderson, who is tied with the most goals in DFW this season, added to her total with three (53) while Anna also scored from Aleida Ortiz, Isabelle Lopez and Natalia Banda.

BOYS: Keller 2, Crowley 1 OT – Riker Doolittle hit a PK in the 85th minute and the Indians beat the Eagles in extra time in Class 6A Region 1. Keller will face El Paso Pebble Hills in Round 2. The Indians, the #1 seed from 4-6A, trailed for more than 70 minutes before scoring in the 72nd minute thanks to Andrew Landowski.
