Drew Medford Baseball Tournament will begin 8th year on Thursday with record 25 teams

The Drew Medford Memorial Tournament will continue on Thursday with games at several Fort Worth-area schools. The tournament will feature 25 teams and run through Saturday. Several scholarships will also be handed out.

Drew Medford was a district MVP, all-state and honorable mention All-America baseball player for Paschal High School and signed to play baseball at TCU. He was killed in an automobile accident in August of 2016. His family and lifelong friends created the baseball tournament the following season to honor his memory and create a legacy for other baseball players.

Medford was known for his passion and dedication to baseball. He was a three-year varsity starter at Paschal and enjoyed playing endless games against some of his best rivals at Arlington Heights High School. In his junior year, he was voted Utility Player of the Year, and he earned All-District MVP accolades as a senior. Additionally, he was an Honorable Mention All-American, as well as First Team All-Texas.

In its 8th years, the DMMT will feature a record 25 teams playing a total of 59 games from Thursday through Saturday at six area high schools – Paschal, Arlington Heights, Aledo, Boswell, Country Day and Mansfield Legacy. The 25 teams playing in the 2024 tournament are Aledo, Arlington, Arlington Heights, Arlington Martin, Azle, Benbrook, Birdville, Boswell, Country Day, Fossil Ridge, Keller Central, Lake Belton, LD Bell, Mansfield, Mansfield Lake Ridge, Mansfield Legacy, Mansfield Timberview, Nolan Catholic, Oakridge, Paschal, Polytechnic, Prestonwood, South Grand Prairie, Trinity Valley and Weatherford.

Since the inaugural tournament in 2017, the DMMT has become one of the most prestigious tournaments in the state.

Since that original six-team tournament, the field has featured 12 teams in 2018, 16 in 2019, 20 in 2020, 2021 and 2023, 24 schools in 2022 and 25 in 2024.

The DMMT will also award scholarships to one senior from all 25 teams.

In its first seven years, the Drew Medford Memorial Tournament has issued more than $164,000 for local baseball players through the generosity of its sponsors and community supporters. This is the fifth straight year that at least 20 scholarships will be awarded. Scholarship recipients are chosen by the coach and/or members of each participating team, and the player must embody the characteristics of Drew Medford: drive to succeed, humility and empathy for others, and a leader on his baseball team. The scholarships are awarded prior to the final game of the tournament between rivals Paschal and Arlington Heights. This year’s game between the Panthers and Yellow Jackets will take place at Paschal at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.
