For the first time since 2015, the Denton Broncos are headed to the regional quarterfinals after beating Aledo 2-1 in the Class 5A Region 1 area round championship on Thursday at Flower Mound HS.
Both teams narrowly missed a chance at a goal – Aledo’s coming in the 9th minute followed by Denton and Joel Rodriguez in the 11th minute. Rodriguez took a cross from Cris Ordonez, but missed wide right.
Aledo took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute off a header by Elliott Smith during a corner kick, but the lead didn’t last long as one minute later Denton tied it with a goal from Chris Guillen, who finished off a cross by Ordonez.
The Broncos took a 2-1 lead in the 37th minute. Ordonez sent a corner kick into the penalty box and Guillen headed it to Jose Blas who finished the score off. Denton awaits Everman and district mate Denton Ryan in the third round.
