Shannon Rhodes, one of the best players to come through both Brewer High School and the Dallas-Fort Worth area metroplex, was recognized by the Lady Bears softball program on Tuesday night with her #9 jersey retired before their district game with Aledo.
Also in attendance was former Brewer coach Vera Ortega, who was coach when Rhodes was there.
Rhodes graduated from Brewer in 2016.
Coming out of high school, Rhodes was ranked as the No. 6 recruit in the nation by FloSoftball.com. During her senior season, she hit 0.462 with nine home runs, 17 doubles and three triples while scoring 53 runs with 33 RBIs. She was named District MVP. As a junior, Rhodes hit 0.462 with 60 hits, 53 runs, 33 RBIs, 11 home runs and went 28-for-29 on stolen base attempts to earn Texas Girls Coaching Association 5A all-state honors.
Rhodes was District Offensive MVP as a sophomore and Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.
After high school, Rhodes played five seasons at Oregon (2) and Texas (3). Among some honors, Rhodes was NCAA Regional MVP in 2017, Pac-12 All-Freshman in 2017 and NFCA All-Pacific Region Second Team in 2018. During her freshman year at Oregon, she hit 0.336 with seven homers and 46 RBIs and played in 59 games with 52 starts – most of which in center field. That year, the Ducks started the season with 35 straight wins.
In two seasons at Oregon, she hit 0.342 with 121 games played and 113 starts.
She had 107 hits, 33 for extra bases, 18 home runs and 88 runs batted in.
At Texas, Rhodes started in all 62 games in 2019 and all 25 games in 2020 before the season was cut short due to COVID.
